A lot of tourists do not visit Faro and go directly from the airport to their holiday destination. That´s a pitty, because Faro is absolutely worth a visit. It is the capital of the Algarve and a lively port town. Besides shopping possibilities as Forum Algarve, the town has some interesting points of interest and museums. Arco da Villa is the main entrance to the old town and was build in the 18th century. The tourist office is next to this gate. If you go through the Arco da Villa you walk in the direction of Sé, a cathedral from the 13th century. Nearby Sé, on the Praça de Alfonso III, you can find the former convent Nossa Senhora de Assun, which is now the Archeological Museum of the Algarve. It has discoveries of Milreu, mosaics, pillars and capitals. The beautiful church Igreja do Carmo is in the north of the town and also worth a visit because of the beautiful 18th century gold-framed carving.
